"There's a wide-open door for great work here, although many oppose me," Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 16:9. How do we handle opposition, similar to Nehemiah when he was rebuilding the broken-down walls of Jerusalem? His enemies spread rumors about him and sent him letters inviting him to meet them. They sent him letters four times, but he gave the same reply each time: that he was doing great work, so why should he stop and come to meet them?

There are three principles we can learn from Nehemiah:

  1. Don't Pay Too Much Attention to Critics: Nehemiah's story teaches us not to get overly bothered by critics. It's important to stay focused on our goals and not get weighed down by opposition or criticism.
  2. Opposition Is a Sign of Respect: When you face opposition or criticism, it might mean you're doing something important. People often resist change or greatness, and opposition can be a sign that your actions are making an impact.
  3. Expect Opposition at Every Step: Just like Nehemiah, who encountered continuous opposition while rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem, it's essential to understand that challenges and adversaries can appear at different stages of any project or endeavor. Be prepared to face them with determination.
  4. Trust in God's Power: Remember that you have the power of God within you to overcome challenges and opposition. Have faith and rely on your inner strength to keep doing good work that honors God and serves the greater good.
  5. Follow Jesus's Example: Emulating the actions and behaviors of Jesus Christ is a powerful way to inspire others and lead by example. By living a life of godliness and pointing others toward salvation, you can positively influence those around you.

These principles encourage resilience, faith, and determination when faced with opposition. By staying focused on your goals, recognizing the significance of your work, and drawing strength from your faith, you can continue to make a positive impact in the world, even when you encounter challenges.
